GalNot News - The Objective Truth about the Galaxy
I made this website to cover lore from Elite Dangerous, a game that is okay.
It's fine. Does some things well, does some things absolutely horrifically. 7/10.
BUT - it has a real-time storyline. Told in-universe by a questionably reliable news outlet. That's pretty neat.
I genuinely believe that this ongoing storyline and lore is Elite's most important feature, the thing that formed the basis of Elite's entire player community and also kept me involved and interested for thousands of hours, both in and out of the actual game. The lore and plotlines have played out over an entire decade, through thousands of GalNet articles and events . Sometimes it can even be affected by players, to some extent.
Most of this lore is also buried by time, and many key events were only partially preserved on GalNet. What the news told you to believe didn't always line up with what you could actually see, if you went to investigate for yourself.
But then years pass. Old wrecks get forgotten, the specific timing of attack and counterattack get lost as entire generations of players come and go. It's basically impossible for new players to get a comprehensive overview of why things happened.
As an example, how many hate the Thargoids because of how they showed up one day and started blowing up stations in the bubble for no reason? It's a story I've heard often, despite it being completely and utterly wrong. Even the details that aren't forgotten outright get distorted, with every new remembering and telling, the game's living memory changing over time.
This website is an attempt to address that. I've invested far too much time into trying to learn the complete story, and I may as well try to drag it all together into a semi-cohesive format - not just the articles, but their context, the relevant ingame events assosciated with them, and analysis of why that story was even being written in the first place.
Some of this analysis will be biased, or incomplete, or looking for an answer that isn't even there. It will never be incorrect, though. By viewing this website, you legally agree that Rainbro is always right. If you have doubts, uh, you're wrong. Go play with the friendly Thargoid over there and the feeling should subside.
